Symposium: Status on Children's Health
Santa Clara Family Health Foundation (SCFHF) held its first symposium on the Status on Children’s Health in Santa Clara County at the Sobrato Community Conference Center in San Jose. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Symposium discussed topics on health coverage for children in Santa Clara County in comparison to children throughout the country and the epidemic of childhood obesity. The purpose of the Symposium was to raise awareness of the importance of children’s health and provide a benchmark for our community. With over 125 attendees from the business community, such as Cisco Systems; community leaders from FIRST 5, PACT, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group; and city officials from Los Gatos, Morgan Hill, Palo Alto, San Jose, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale, SCFHF hoped that the 4-hour Symposium provided valuable knowledge that our community will be able to use as they develop frameworks to increase the health and well-being of children in Santa Clara County over the next couple of years.

2010 Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot
Run or Walk for Healthy, Hope, and a Home
Over 22,000 Silicon Valley residents and out-of-towners started Thanksgiving Day off on the right food at the Applied Materials ‘Silicon Valley Turkey Trot’. Raising over $600,000, this year’s annual race was amazing! That is over a 50% growth of participants from last year's registrants of just over 14,000.
The community gave “thanks” by helping Santa Clara Family Health Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County as proceeds from the race benefit these three organizations. The three charities provide families with their most basic needs for “health, hope, and a home.” The Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, founded and produced by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, concluded its seventh year and the total amount received by the three charities now exceeds $2 million.
There were several events to choose from in the 5K and 10K runs and walks, along with a kid’s fun run. Elite runners, joggers, and walkers enjoyed the downtown San Jose course, which was flat, fast, and flowed through neighborhoods and business areas.
Be sure to put next year’s event on your calendar! Join in next year’s fun and support Santa Clara Family Health Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County.
